The Rogers Varsity Volleyball team dropped a highly contested conference match to North Branch in 5 sets (25-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 13-15) on October 9. It was an emotional night as the Royals honored their Senior Players (Amanda Bohnsack, Kylie Grauf, Chloe Lundberg, Amanda Grassel, and Meghan Ellingson) in front of family and friends at their last regular season home game. The visiting Vikings proved last season’s state tournament berth was no fluke as they took an early two-set lead despite some strong play by the Royals. Rogers fought back though taking the 3rd and 4th set 25-19 and 25-23 to force the deciding 5th set. The Royals looked to complete the comeback win leading late in the 5th set 13-9, but the Vikings battled back to get 6 straight points from some untimely Rogers errors to win the set 13-15. As a team the Royals had 10.5 blocks, 77 Digs, 64 kills, and 11 Service Aces.
Despite the close loss in the Varsity match, Rogers swept North Branch in the lower level matches. JV won 25-16, 25 -17, and B-Squad defeated their counterparts 25-11, 25-23. 9A prevailed in their tight match, 25-18, 25-23. and 9B cruised through their game 25-7, 25-17. The Royals B-Squad and 9B teams remain undefeated. The Royals play their last regular season game at St. Francis on October 16.
As part of the Rogers Volleyball Senior Night festivities, Senior Amanda Grassel was awarded the Darla Westberg Memorial Scholarship during this evening’s match. Darla was an active supporter of Rogers Volleyball before she lost her battle to cancer three years ago. This scholarship is awarded annually by her friends and family to a lucky Senior on the Rogers High School Volleyball team who exemplifies the traits and character of being a great teammate and leader. Congratulations, Amanda!
